The UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology has signed a landmark declaration with its BRICS counterparts to establish a new Centre for Industrial Competences. This initiative, supported by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), aims to enhance industrial skills and foster industrial development among member nations.
The declaration was formalized during the 8th BRICS Industry Ministers Meeting, which took place with representatives from the UAE, Russia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iran, and South Africa in attendance. Chaired by Russia, the meeting centered on the theme "Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security."
The Centre for Industrial Competences will serve as a key component of the New Industrial Revolution (NIR) framework, addressing critical challenges and opportunities within the evolving industrial sector. It will focus on advancing industrial skills across member countries and fostering collaboration in key areas including chemicals, metals, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), smart manufacturing, clean technology, and medical equipment.

Omar Al Suwaidi, Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, signed the declaration on behalf of the UAE. He lauded Russia's leadership and underscored the potential for industrial progress through BRICS cooperation. Al Suwaidi highlighted that BRICS nations collectively represent nearly 45 percent of the global population and about a third of global GDP.
In his remarks, Al Suwaidi emphasized the UAE's dedication to enhancing global partnerships and addressing significant global issues such as food security and climate change. The declaration outlines the formation of several working groups focused on various industrial sectors and reaffirms the commitment to supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 9, which pertains to industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
The Centre will also support the PartNIR Innovation Centre in policy coordination, training, and project development. The PartNIR Innovation Centre has previously hosted events such as the BRICS New Industrial Revolution Exhibition and the BRICS Forum on Future Networks Innovation.
The meeting concluded with a review of past agreements aimed at deepening BRICS cooperation in industrialization, innovation, inclusiveness, and investment, including the Johannesburg II Declaration from August 2023. Delegates also expressed support for Brazil, which will host the 9th BRICS Industry Ministers Meeting in 2025.
Since joining BRICS in January 2024, the UAE's participation is expected to contribute significantly to the bloc's economic impact, with forecasts suggesting that BRICS could represent 45 percent of the global economy by 2040.
