UAE Donates to UNICEF for Urgent Aid in Sudan Crisis

The UAE has announced a significant contribution of $7 million to support critical humanitarian efforts in Sudan and South Sudan. This pledge, made in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), underscores the UAE's ongoing commitment to addressing the severe humanitarian crises in these countries.

According to the UAE state news agency Wam, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reached an agreement with UNICEF to allocate $6 million for Sudan and $1 million for South Sudan. The funds are intended to support vital services for children and women affected by the ongoing conflict in these regions.

The crisis in Sudan has reached alarming levels, with approximately 13.6 million children in urgent need of assistance. The civil war, which has been ongoing for over a year, has displaced more than six million people, over half of whom are children, making it one of the world's largest child displacement crises.

The UAE's funding will enhance UNICEF’s efforts to provide essential services such as primary health care, quality water, and education. This includes both formal and non-formal educational programs, including early learning initiatives.

Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, emphasized the UAE’s dedication to supporting vulnerable populations affected by the conflict. “The UAE is deeply committed to supporting the most vulnerable, particularly children, who are bearing the brunt of the crisis in Sudan and South Sudan,” she stated. “Through this agreement with UNICEF, we are reinforcing our commitment to delivering life-saving assistance and ensuring that children have access to essential services.”

Al Hashimy also highlighted the UAE's role in international efforts to address the crisis. The UAE has actively participated in Sudan peace talks in Geneva as an observer, aiming to facilitate the delivery of aid, especially to the most vulnerable populations. The country has supported the movement of humanitarian aid through the Adre Crossing, the most direct route from Chad into Sudan.

Over the past decade, the UAE has donated more than $3.5 billion in aid to Sudan. Since the conflict's outbreak in 2023, the UAE has provided $230 million in humanitarian assistance and organized 159 relief flights, delivering over 10,000 tonnes of food, medical supplies, and other relief items. Additionally, the UAE has established two field hospitals in Chad, which have treated more than 45,000 individuals.

In April, the UAE committed an additional $100 million to support humanitarian efforts in Sudan and neighboring countries. This pledge was announced by Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan, Minister of State, at an international conference in Paris dedicated to supporting Sudan.

The UAE has consistently called for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict, demonstrating its ongoing support for the Sudanese people and its dedication to humanitarian principles.
