The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has entered into a significant agreement with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), pledging AED 25.7 million to bolster critical humanitarian efforts in Sudan and South Sudan. This commitment, announced by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), underscores the country’s ongoing dedication to addressing severe humanitarian crises.
Under the terms of the agreement, AED 22 million is allocated to support UNICEF’s operations in Sudan, while AED 3.7 million is designated for its activities in South Sudan. This substantial financial support aims to alleviate the dire conditions facing millions of children and families affected by the prolonged conflict in these regions.
The conflict in Sudan has reached alarming levels, with an estimated 13.6 million children in urgent need of assistance. The violence has displaced over six million people, including a large number of children, making Sudan the epicenter of the world’s largest child displacement crisis. The UAE’s contribution is expected to play a crucial role in providing these children with essential services, including primary health care, access to clean water, and educational opportunities through both formal and informal channels.

Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, UAE’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, emphasized the country’s strong commitment to aiding vulnerable populations affected by conflict. She stated, "The UAE is deeply committed to supporting the most vulnerable populations affected by conflict, particularly children who are bearing the brunt of the crisis in Sudan and South Sudan. Through this agreement with UNICEF, we reinforce our dedication to providing life-saving assistance and ensuring children can access the essential services they desperately need. The UAE will continue to stand by the brotherly Sudanese people in their time of need, working with international partners to address the urgent humanitarian challenges."
Al Hashimy also highlighted the UAE’s participation in the Sudan talks in Geneva as an observer, underscoring the UAE’s efforts to facilitate aid delivery and ensure that humanitarian actors and aid are able to move through critical points like the Adre Crossing.
Over the past decade, the UAE has provided more than US$3.5 billion (AED 12.9 billion) in aid to Sudan, demonstrating its long-standing commitment to helping those in crisis. Since the outbreak of the conflict in 2023, the UAE has contributed US$230 million (AED 844.8 million) in humanitarian aid and coordinated 159 relief flights, delivering over 10,000 tonnes of food, medical, and relief supplies. Additionally, the UAE has established two field hospitals in Chad, which have treated more than 45,000 individuals.
The UAE continues to advocate for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the violence, stressing that there is no military solution to the conflict. The country calls for dialogue among the warring parties to achieve a peaceful resolution and support efforts aimed at establishing a political settlement. The UAE remains engaged with all relevant stakeholders, committed to supporting processes that lead to a lasting peace and the formation of a civilian-led government in Sudan.
