UAE Accepts Taliban Ambassador from Afghanistan in Rare Move

In a significant diplomatic development, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has accepted the credentials of Mawlawi Badruddin Haqqani as Afghanistan's ambassador, becoming only the second country to do so after China. The acceptance was confirmed during a ceremony in Abu Dhabi, according to announcements from the Kabul foreign ministry.

A UAE official commented on the decision, stating, "The decision reaffirms our determination to contribute to building bridges and supporting the people of Afghanistan through constructive engagement." This move aligns with the UAE's broader strategy to foster relationships and support regional stability.

Despite the contentious nature of the Taliban's rule and its international isolation, the US has refrained from criticizing the UAE's decision, indicating that it will not alter the existing relations between Washington and Abu Dhabi. US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby emphasized that the US respects the UAE's sovereign decisions on diplomatic recognition and relationships.

The UAE's recognition of the Taliban ambassador comes amidst its growing involvement in Afghanistan. An Emirati firm, GAAC, has been managing Afghanistan’s airports since the US withdrawal and the Taliban's return to power in 2021. This engagement has been part of the UAE’s broader efforts to support Afghanistan through humanitarian assistance and development projects.

The Taliban’s acceptance of its ambassador is seen as a diplomatic victory given its continued international isolation and the lack of recognition from the United Nations, largely due to its policies restricting girls' education. The UAE has pledged to provide humanitarian aid and support regional stability through various development and reconstruction projects.

Earlier this week, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed made headlines by visiting Afghanistan’s Prime Minister, Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, during his treatment at a UAE hospital. This visit underscored the UAE's ongoing commitment to its diplomatic and humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan.

The UAE joins a limited number of countries with Taliban diplomatic representation, including Iran, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan, while Nicaragua appointed a non-resident ambassador to Afghanistan in June. The UAE was previously among the few nations that recognized the Taliban government that was overthrown in 2001, alongside Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
