UAE: A Pakistani family in Sharjah's hopes for education are dashed by heavy rains

The anticipation of a new school term was dashed for six-year-old Asif and his twelve-year-old brother, Aamir, along with their mother, Saima, hailing from Karachi, Pakistan. After eagerly awaiting their return to school following the Eid break, their excitement turned to despair when heavy rains inundated their home in Sharjah's Al Sabka area on April 16. Forced to seek refuge in a friend's house in Ajman, they hoped for a swift resolution to their predicament.

However, upon their return to their residence on Wednesday, their hopes were met with disappointment as they found their home still submerged in ankle-deep water. The deluge spared nothing, soaking their furniture, rendering household appliances inoperable, and destroying the newly acquired schoolbooks and supplies.

Saima, overwhelmed with distress, lamented the loss of the recently purchased educational materials. Compounding their woes, Saima's husband, who holds a modest job in Ajman, struggles to support the family financially. With their resources stretched thin, Saima faces the grim reality of withdrawing her children from school due to an inability to pay fees or purchase new books.

The funds earmarked for education expenses must now be redirected towards house cleaning and essential supplies, leaving the family grappling with the harsh aftermath of the flooding. As they navigate this challenging situation, the future of Asif and Aamir's education hangs in the balance, highlighting the devastating impact of natural disasters on vulnerable communities.
