Typhoon Krathon made landfall on Thursday in Kaohsiung, a major port city in southern Taiwan, unleashing maximum sustained winds of 126 kilometers per hour (78 mph) and powerful gusts reaching 162 kilometers per hour (101 mph), according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau.

The slow-moving typhoon has been battering the eastern and southern regions of the island for the past five days, resulting in severe weather conditions that have forced thousands of residents to evacuate from vulnerable mountainous and low-lying areas. In preparation for the storm, schools and government offices across Taiwan have been closed for two consecutive days, while all domestic flights have been canceled, further impacting travel and daily activities.
As the storm approached, many residents woke to urgent mobile alerts advising them to seek shelter from the oncoming winds, which were recorded at speeds of up to 134 kilometers per hour (83 mph) with gusts exceeding 166 kilometers per hour (103 mph). Weather authorities cautioned Kaohsiung and Pingtung County residents against venturing outdoors, even when the eye of the storm briefly passed overhead, as conditions were expected to worsen once the storm’s circulation returned.
The impact of Typhoon Krathon has already resulted in injuries to at least 123 individuals across the island, according to Taiwan’s fire department. Tragically, two fatalities were reported: one victim died after driving into fallen rocks in Taitung County, while another lost their life while trimming tree branches in Hualien. Additionally, two people remain unaccounted for as rescue operations continue.
Thousands of residents were evacuated from areas at high risk for mudslides and landslides, particularly in mountainous regions where rainfall has accumulated to a staggering 169 centimeters (approximately 5.5 feet) over the past five days. Nearly 40,000 military personnel are on standby to assist with rescue efforts and provide relief as needed.
In terms of rainfall, meteorological agencies predict that some areas in eastern and southern Taiwan could experience extremely heavy rains, with accumulations reaching up to 40 centimeters (1.3 feet) within the next 24 hours.
Typhoons are relatively rare on Taiwan’s western coast, typically affecting the island's mountainous eastern regions instead. Krathon is projected to continue its slow northward path, gradually weakening into a tropical depression by Friday before potentially reaching the capital city of Taipei.
Earlier in the week, Typhoon Krathon impacted the northern Philippine islands, where it caused the deaths of four individuals and displaced approximately 5,000 residents, highlighting the storm's severe reach across the region. As Taiwan braces for the full force of Typhoon Krathon, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to remain vigilant and safe.
