Ankara: Turkey has decided to halt all trade activities with Israel in response to what it perceives as ongoing violence against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as announced by the Turkish Trade Ministry. This decision comes as a continuation of Turkey's recent imposition of export restrictions on a variety of goods to Israel, initiated last month, with Ankara affirming on Thursday that these measures would persist until a ceasefire is established in Gaza.
The Turkish Trade Ministry's statement highlights Ankara's growing concerns over the situation in Gaza, citing the need for a cessation of hostilities and the prioritization of humanitarian relief efforts. The initial restrictions imposed in April targeted 54 product groups destined for Israel, reflecting Turkey's condemnation of what it terms as Israel's continued disregard for international ceasefire initiatives and its obstruction of humanitarian aid deliveries.

The Trade Ministry underscored its observation of ongoing aggressive actions by the Israeli government, coupled with a worsening humanitarian crisis in Palestine. In response, Turkey has initiated the second phase of its state-level measures, suspending all export and import transactions with Israel across all product categories. These measures will be rigorously enforced until Israel facilitates the uninterrupted and adequate flow of humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
Additionally, Turkey is working closely with Palestinian authorities to ensure that the Palestinian population, enduring life under occupation, will not suffer adverse consequences from these trade restrictions. The Ministry emphasizes the importance of solidarity with the Palestinian people and pledges to safeguard their interests amid this challenging period.
According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute, trade between Turkey and Israel amounted to $6.8 billion in 2023, with Turkish exports comprising the majority share at 76 percent of the total trade volume. This trade relationship, now disrupted by Turkey's decision, reflects a significant economic exchange that underscores the broader implications of the current diplomatic tension between the two nations.
