Turkey Seeks BRICS Membership to Expand Alliances Beyond Western Influence

Turkey has formally applied to join the BRICS group of emerging-market nations as it seeks to expand its global influence and build new alliances beyond its traditional Western partners. This move comes amid growing frustration within President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's administration over the slow progress of Turkey's long-standing bid to join the European Union.

The application to BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, reflects Turkey's strategic shift towards engaging with a multipolar world while maintaining its role as a key member of NATO. This diplomatic push is aimed at enhancing Turkey’s international standing and economic connections, particularly with Eastern nations.

Erdogan's administration perceives a significant geopolitical shift away from developed economies towards emerging markets. The Turkish government views BRICS as an opportunity to strengthen ties with a diverse range of global players, even as it continues to fulfill its NATO obligations. The application also arises from recent tensions with NATO allies, particularly due to Turkey's ongoing close relationship with Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The application for BRICS membership was submitted several months ago, partly in response to the stagnation in Turkey's EU accession process and escalating rifts with NATO partners. Turkish officials have highlighted the need for a balanced foreign policy that engages both Eastern and Western alliances.

Erdogan emphasized that improving relations with both Eastern and Western countries is crucial for Turkey's future prosperity and effectiveness. He stated that neglecting either side would be detrimental to the country.

The BRICS group has recently expanded to include Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia, and Egypt, and is considering further enlargement. The upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, from October 22-24 is expected to address potential new members, with Malaysia, Thailand, and Turkey's ally Azerbaijan also seeking inclusion.

BRICS positions itself as an alternative to Western-dominated institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, offering new members potential access to development financing and expanded political and trade relationships. Turkey’s interest in joining BRICS aligns with its goal of improving economic cooperation with Russia and China and serving as a trade conduit between Europe and Asia.

Additionally, Turkey aims to enhance its role as a hub for gas exports from Russia and Central Asia and attract investment from Chinese electric car manufacturers, leveraging its customs union with the EU to boost market access.

Despite these efforts, Turkey is also working to revitalize its EU membership talks, which remain a strategic priority. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, after attending a BRICS foreign ministers meeting in June, reiterated the importance of balancing relationships with both the EU and alternative international organizations.

Turkey’s dual approach underscores its strategy to navigate a complex global landscape while pursuing multiple avenues for economic and political growth.
