Trump's Win Fueled by Xenophobia, Anger Over Wars & Migration

Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election has been attributed to a combination of economic frustrations, concerns over immigration, and voter dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden’s handling of key issues like the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Despite the challenges faced during his previous term, including two impeachments and a criminal conviction, Trump managed to secure a decisive win, outpacing his previous electoral performance.

Trump bagged 295 electoral votes, including most of the key swing states, capitalizing on voter unease over inflation, rising living costs, and the economic fallout from the pandemic. Exit polls revealed that for many voters, the economy was the top priority, with inflation and job insecurity dominating their concerns. These were issues that had worsened under Biden's administration, making Trump’s pro-business stance more appealing.

Immigration was another major factor that fueled Trump’s support. As migration along the southern border surged under Biden, Trump harnessed the growing resentment toward illegal immigration, especially in rural and border states. While Republicans had long criticized Biden's handling of border security, even some Democrats and independents moved rightward on the issue. Trump had long painted migrants as a threat to national security and proposed drastic measures to combat the surge. His position resonated with 57% of voters in favor of deporting immigrants, and more than half of voters supported a border wall—two central elements of his policy agenda. These policies helped Trump further his appeal to voters frustrated by the strain migration placed on public services and resources.

The situation at the U.S.-Mexico border, where unlawful crossings hit record levels in December 2023, particularly fueled Trump’s rhetoric. In contrast to Biden’s relatively lenient immigration policies, Trump had introduced strict measures, such as family separation, and invoked emergency powers to close the border. The soaring number of illegal entries during Biden’s term gave Trump an opening to galvanize his base and advocate for stronger immigration control.

Another area where Trump capitalized was the economy. The inflation and rising costs of living under Biden led to significant voter dissatisfaction. Under Biden, the U.S. struggled with high inflation and the economic fallout from both the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. Meanwhile, Trump’s first term was marked by strong economic growth, low unemployment, and a booming stock market. In this election, Trump was able to contrast his economic record with that of Biden, making him a more appealing candidate for those suffering amid economic uncertainty.

Further fueling Trump’s campaign was the U.S.’s foreign policy. Many voters, particularly those in rural America, voiced frustration over the substantial financial aid sent to Ukraine and Israel, especially when citizens were struggling with basic necessities. The Biden administration’s unwavering support for Israel during the Gaza conflict sparked backlash among some minority communities, particularly Arab-Americans, many of whom felt that Biden’s policies ignored their concerns. In Michigan, which has a significant Arab-American population, Trump’s improved performance suggested a shift in support from these communities.

Trump’s support among minority voters also saw a noticeable increase in key battleground states. In Georgia’s Baldwin County, which has a large African-American population, voters swung Republican for the first time since 2004. Additionally, Trump made significant inroads with Hispanic voters in states like Nevada and Arizona. National exit polls revealed that Trump had a notable increase in support from Latino men, a group that had traditionally leaned Democratic. His popularity among Latino men rose from 27% to 42% in Pennsylvania, and nationally, his support grew from 36% to 54%. According to polling, Trump garnered the support of one in three voters of color, a performance that was the best by any Republican since George W. Bush's re-election campaign in 2004.

Rural America, long a stronghold for Trump, remained firmly in his corner, with swing states adding to his margin of victory. Trump’s political rise was largely driven by his ability to tap into voters’ frustration with the perceived elitism of the political establishment. Democrats, particularly former candidate Hillary Clinton, had dismissed Trump supporters as “deplorables,” but Trump’s success in these areas showed that these voters were not to be underestimated.

The 2024 election also marked a significant shift in the GOP’s appeal, with Trump successfully courting more diverse groups, including Latino and African-American voters, who had once been largely outside the Republican fold. The Democratic Party’s refusal to engage with these groups or acknowledge their concerns left a gap that Trump capitalized on.

Trump’s victory speech, delivered after the election results, echoed his campaign’s core message of American renewal. He promised to usher in a “golden age of America” and reaffirmed his commitment to policies that prioritize the needs of the American people above all else. His success in securing a second term reflects a growing disillusionment with the status quo, and his ability to leverage concerns over immigration, the economy, and foreign policy has positioned him as a key figure in shaping the future of American politics.
