Trump Warns TikTok Risks, Fears Ban Strengthens Facebook

Post by: Dr. Amrinder Pal Singh

In a recent statement, former President Donald Trump expressed his concerns about TikTok, deeming it a potential national security threat due to its Chinese ownership. However, Trump also pointed out the dilemma of a TikTok ban inadvertently strengthening Facebook, which he labeled as an "enemy of the people."

Speaking on CNBC's "Squawk Box," Trump reiterated his belief in TikTok posing security risks. He emphasized the need to prioritize privacy and protect Americans' data rights. Despite acknowledging issues with Facebook and other companies, Trump highlighted the complexity of deciding on a TikTok ban, considering the platform's popularity, especially among young users.

Trump recognized the dilemma, stating, "There's a lot of good, and there's a lot of bad with TikTok." He pointed out that a ban on TikTok could potentially benefit Facebook, a platform he criticized for being detrimental to the country, particularly in elections.

The former president suggested that if TikTok, Facebook, and other platforms were banned, Facebook would be a significant beneficiary. He criticized Facebook's impact on the nation, especially in the context of elections, referring to it as "very bad for the country."

TikTok, known for its short, viral videos, is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. Global concerns about user privacy arose, leading to bans in some countries, including India, where TikTok and other Chinese apps were prohibited for national security reasons in June 2020. Trump's comments shed light on the intricate balance between national security considerations and the competitive landscape among major social media platforms.
