Donald Trump has petitioned a judge to lift the gag order imposed on him during his recent criminal trial in New York. This move comes after Trump became the first former US president to be convicted in a criminal trial. The limited gag order was initially imposed by Judge Juan Merchan, prohibiting Trump from making public comments regarding jurors, witnesses, prosecutors, and court personnel. Subsequently, the scope of the order was expanded to include Trump's family and the prosecutor's family.
Trump faced consequences for violating the gag order, with the Manhattan court imposing a $10,000 fine after he breached the order on ten occasions. Additionally, Trump was warned of potential imprisonment for openly defying the judge's directive.
Before the imposition of the gag order, Trump had utilized his Truth Social platform to launch repeated attacks on potential witnesses and prosecutors involved in his trial.

The trial culminated in jurors finding Trump guilty of falsifying business records to conceal a sex scandal during the final stages of the 2016 presidential campaign. Scheduled for sentencing on July 11, Trump, who is vying to reclaim the presidency in the upcoming election, awaits his fate.
In a letter addressed to the judge, Trump's attorney Todd Blanche urged the termination of the gag order, arguing that the concerns raised during the trial no longer warrant restrictions on Trump's First Amendment rights. Blanche emphasized Trump's status as a leading contender in the 2024 presidential race as grounds for lifting the gag order.
Furthermore, Blanche cited remarks made by Trump's political rival, President Joe Biden, following the trial's verdict, as evidence supporting the request to lift the gag order. Biden's critique of Trump, labeling him a "convicted felon" seeking the presidency, underscores the contentious atmosphere surrounding the upcoming election.
