The U.S. President, Donald Trump, has cast doubt on the capability of Iranian dissident Reza Pahlavi to unite support within Iran to take the helm. In an exclusive dialogue from the White House, Trump noted that while Pahlavi “seems very nice,” he remains uncertain about Pahlavi’s actual sway in Iran.

Pahlavi, aged 65, is the offspring of Iran’s last monarch and has resided abroad since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. He has emerged as a symbolic figure for many demonstrators amid the current upheaval in Iran, which has resulted in thousands of deaths due to a government crackdown. Despite his established presence, the Iranian opposition is splintered into various factions, complicating any effort towards cohesive leadership.

On the issue of the Ukraine conflict, Trump claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stands as a significant barrier to achieving peace with Russia. He articulated that he believes Russian leader Vladimir Putin is open to negotiations, contrary to Zelenskiy’s hesitance to fully accept the proposals.

Within domestic matters, Trump brushed off criticisms from Republicans regarding the Justice Department’s investigation into Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. He urged party members to demonstrate loyalty and addressed concerns that his inquiries could impact inflation.

Trump reflected on the possibility of the Iranian regime's collapse in light of ongoing protests, suggesting that “any government can falter.” He pointed out that this is an “interesting period” for Iran, highlighting the unpredictability of the country’s political landscape.

Additionally, Trump lauded Venezuelan acting president Delcy Rodriguez and announced an impending meeting with opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, whom he described as “a very nice woman.” They plan to discuss fundamental issues.

In his interview, Trump also emphasized U.S. economic strength, asserting that the economy is faring well with robust job statistics and intends to promote this narrative at the upcoming World Economic Forum in Davos. There, he anticipates dialogues with leaders from Switzerland, Poland, and Egypt.

In summary, Trump’s remarks signify a prudent stance towards Iran’s dissent while encapsulating his continued engagement with various international and domestic challenges as he deepens his involvement in the second year of his presidency.
