Former US President Donald Trump vowed to implement a reciprocal tax if he is elected again, claiming that India imposes the highest tariffs on foreign goods compared to other major countries. During an economic policy speech in Detroit, Trump emphasized the importance of reciprocity in his plan to revitalize the American economy.

He highlighted that while the United States generally does not charge high tariffs, other countries, particularly China and Brazil, impose significant tariffs on American products. He described India as “the biggest charger of all” when it comes to tariffs, stating, “I think they probably charge more than, in many ways, China.”

Trump expressed admiration for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referring to him as a “great leader” and praising their strong relationship. He shared an anecdote about a meeting with Harley Davidson executives, who described India as a challenging market due to its high tariffs, which can reach as much as 150%. He noted that while Harley Davidson products do not sell well in India due to these tariffs, the company established a plant in India to circumvent those fees.

Trump reiterated his positive feelings toward Modi, referring to him as “the nicest human being” and a personal friend. He recounted Modi's visit to Houston in 2019, where they attended a large event that drew significant crowds. Trump reflected on the friendship he cultivated with Modi, stating that he had offered assistance during moments of tension involving India.

Overall, Trump's comments reflect his broader economic strategy of prioritizing American interests and addressing perceived unfair trade practices from other nations while maintaining a cordial relationship with India and its leadership.
