Trump Ends Harvard’s Federal Funds Over Campus Dispute

Post by : Layla Badr

The administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump has officially decided to stop giving Harvard University public money for research. This is a major step in the ongoing argument between the government and the well-known university.

On Monday, U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon wrote a letter to Harvard saying that the university has made a “mockery” of higher education. Because of this, she said Harvard will no longer get money from the government and should rely only on its large endowment (which is like the university's savings) and donations from wealthy former students.

“Harvard will no longer be funded by the public,” McMahon said. “It can now function as a privately-funded school using the money it already has and the support of its rich alumni.”

This decision came after the Trump administration already froze $2.3 billion in federal funds that were meant for Harvard. They did this because they believed Harvard was not doing enough to stop anti-Semitism (hostility or discrimination against Jewish people) on campus.

The administration had given Harvard a list of demands last month. One of the main demands was that outside auditors should be allowed to check whether the school was making room for different opinions and beliefs. Harvard refused, saying it would give the government too much control over the university.

In her letter, McMahon, who used to run World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), brought up several complaints. She said Harvard has low academic standards and allows foreign students into the country who act violently or disrespect America.

She wrote, “Where are these so-called students coming from? Who are they? How are they getting into Harvard—or even into our country? And why is there so much HATE?” She said these questions need answers and accused Harvard of hiding the truth from the public.

Harvard is already taking the Trump administration to court over the earlier funding freeze. In a statement, the university said McMahon’s new threats are illegal and would stop important research that saves lives.

A Harvard spokesperson said, “Today’s letter threatens to block more funding just because we went to court to protect our rights. We will follow the law, support different viewpoints, and continue fighting anti-Semitism on campus. We will also stand up against illegal government actions that try to stop our research and innovation, which help keep Americans safe.”

Many colleges in the U.S. have faced problems over reports of anti-Semitism, especially since student protests broke out last year over the war in Gaza.

Harvard recently released two reports saying both Jewish and Muslim students and staff have faced unfair treatment on campus. Harvard’s new President, Alan Garber, said some students have been made to feel left out because of who they are or what they believe. He promised to make the campus a place where everyone is respected.

For years, Trump and other conservatives have criticized Harvard and similar schools, saying they push far-left ideas and silence conservative opinions.
