In a rally held in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on Friday, former President Donald Trump made startling allegations about the fate of migrant children who entered the United States illegally. Trump accused Vice President Kamala Harris and the Biden administration of being responsible for the plight of these children, asserting that many are now missing, dead, or being exploited as sex slaves.
During his speech, Trump claimed that approximately 325,000 minors who crossed the U.S. border are currently unaccounted for. He criticized Harris, who was previously dubbed the "border czar," for what he described as a failed approach to handling the crisis. “Think of the number—325,000 children are missing. Many are dead. Many are involved in sex operations. Many are working as slaves in different parts of probably this country,” Trump declared to the rally audience.
Trump's remarks come amid ongoing controversy and scrutiny over the Biden administration's handling of unaccompanied migrant minors. The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general reported that 323,000 migrant children under the age of 18 have either failed to attend immigration court hearings or were released from custody without further follow-up.
The debate over unaccompanied migrant children intensified after President Joe Biden took office, when his administration decided to allow these minors to remain in the U.S. rather than face deportation under a COVID-19-era health policy that had been enforced during Trump's presidency. While Biden's team argued that this approach was more humane, critics contended that it encouraged an increase in unaccompanied minors crossing the border, many of whom are older teenagers.

Investigative reports later revealed troubling information about the conditions some of these children faced. Reports surfaced indicating that some minors placed by the Department of Health and Human Services were forced into labor, working long hours in harsh conditions, including cleaning sharp equipment in slaughterhouses. The situation has raised serious concerns about the treatment of vulnerable migrant children and the effectiveness of the policies in place to protect them.
Trump's comments and the ongoing debate highlight the complex and contentious nature of immigration policy and its impact on the lives of those it aims to address.
