President-elect Donald Trump has decided to appoint Stephen Miller, an outspoken immigration hawk, as his Deputy Chief of Staff. While the appointment has yet to be officially announced by Trump, Vice President-elect JD Vance confirmed the news in a post on X, expressing his support for the decision. Vance called the move "another fantastic pick by the President."

Stephen Miller is a well-known figure in Trump’s political orbit, having previously served as a senior policy adviser and speechwriter during Trump’s first term in office. He also played a prominent role in Trump’s 2016 campaign, often traveling with the candidate to his rallies. Known for his hardline stance on immigration, Miller has been a key architect of Trump’s policies aimed at restricting immigration and curbing illegal immigration.
Miller's appointment comes as part of a broader reshuffling of Trump’s team, with other key appointments being made in the days following the election. Just last week, Trump announced that he had selected Susan Wiles, one of his main campaign managers, as his Chief of Staff. On Sunday evening, Trump also confirmed the appointment of Tom Homan as "Border Czar," a role focused on overseeing deportations and tightening border security.
Miller and Homan are expected to work closely together in implementing Trump’s aggressive immigration agenda, which was a central focus of his 2024 presidential campaign. Both Miller and Homan have been strong proponents of cracking down on illegal immigration, and their appointments underscore the priority Trump places on immigration reform.
Miller has been a vocal advocate for stringent immigration policies and has stated in interviews that illegal immigrants should be detained in camps until they can be deported. He has expressed his belief that the Trump administration should use the full range of federal powers to execute a comprehensive crackdown on illegal immigration. In an interview last year, Miller warned that Trump would "unleash the vast arsenal of federal powers" to implement what he called the "most spectacular migration crackdown" in US history.
Miller also reiterated the urgency of starting deportations immediately after Trump takes office. "Deportations will begin on Inauguration Day, as soon as he takes the oath of office," Miller said in a recent interview. One of Miller’s controversial proposals that Trump has supported is ending birthright citizenship, a practice that grants automatic citizenship to anyone born on US soil, regardless of their parents' immigration status.
Miller’s new role does not require Senate confirmation, and his appointment reflects his long-standing influence within Trump’s inner circle. Before joining Trump’s 2016 campaign, Miller worked for conservative Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and later for former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
In addition to these key appointments, Trump announced on Monday morning that he is naming Congresswoman Elise Stefanik as the permanent US representative to the United Nations. Stefanik’s appointment marks the second Cabinet-level position Trump has announced since his election, following Wiles’ selection as Chief of Staff.
As Trump continues to assemble his administration, it’s clear that immigration policy will be a focal point of his agenda. The appointments of Miller, Homan, and others signal a continued commitment to Trump’s hardline immigration stance as he prepares to take office.
