In a tragic incident early Saturday morning, a van filled with migrants slid off the road and overturned in central Croatia, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuring 25 others, some of whom sustained serious injuries, according to police and medical reports.
The accident occurred around 1 a.m. near the village of Peklenica, located approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of Croatia's capital, Zagreb. Authorities stated that a police patrol had spotted the van, which bore German license plates, and initiated a pursuit after the driver accelerated in an apparent attempt to evade them.
The officers reported that after several kilometers, they found the van overturned in a ditch. Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicle struck a concrete bridge, a house, and a power pole before veering off the road.

Medical personnel informed local media that nine of the injured migrants were in serious condition and were receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. The affected individuals include nationals from Iraq, Turkey, Syria, and Palestine, highlighting the diverse backgrounds of those seeking refuge.
This incident underscores the perilous journeys faced by migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Just last month, a similar accident in Croatia left 14 individuals injured, further illustrating the dangers associated with such treacherous travel.
Many migrants resort to hiring people smugglers to navigate borders illegally in their quest to reach wealthier countries in Western Europe. This often results in overcrowded and unsafe conditions in vehicles, contributing to the high risks of accidents like the one witnessed on Saturday.
