In a tragic incident near Mumbai, a family of seven, including a man, a woman, and children, were swept away by swollen waters at a waterfall in Lonavala. Only two managed to swim back to safety amidst the raging currents. The family, holidaying in the hill station just 80 km from Mumbai, had gone for a picnic near the Bhusi Dam backwaters, popular during the monsoon season.
Heavy rains earlier in the day had caused the dam to overflow, intensifying the waterfall's flow. Terrifying footage captured their final moments as they clung to each other on a rock amidst the tumultuous cascade, before being overwhelmed and carried downstream within seconds. Despite onlookers' efforts to assist, the swift waters prevented any immediate rescue attempts.

The incident occurred around 1:30 pm, prompting locals and police to launch a search operation using ropes and trekking gear. According to reports, the tourists slipped on moss-covered boulders near the waterfall's base, losing their footing and being swept away into the reservoir below.
This tragedy has raised concerns about safety measures at the waterfall and downstream at the Bhusi Dam. Footage from the scene showed tourists sitting along the dam's edge, seemingly unaware of the risks posed by the rushing waters. No visible security arrangements were in place to prevent access to hazardous areas, highlighting gaps in safety protocols.
Authorities continue their efforts to recover the bodies of the victims, with the search and rescue operation set to resume at daybreak.
