In the predawn hours of Wednesday, tragedy struck in southwest Pakistan as a speeding passenger bus careened off a highway, hurtling into a rocky ravine. The catastrophic incident claimed the lives of at least 28 individuals and left another 20 injured, according to officials.
Accounts from local police officer Asghar Ali detailed the sudden loss of control by the bus driver in Washuk town, while the vehicle was en route from Turbat, Baluchistan's second-largest city, to Quetta, the provincial capital. The driver, sadly, was among the fatalities. Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances leading to the devastating crash.
Ismail Mengal, a government administrator in Washuk, underscored the ongoing efforts to ascertain the crash's cause. Rescuers and law enforcement swiftly mobilized, providing initial medical aid to the injured passengers. The deceased and wounded were promptly transported to a nearby hospital, with some individuals listed in critical condition.

Visuals captured by local media depicted the wreckage strewn across the rugged terrain of the ravine, emphasizing the severity of the incident. In response, Sarfraz Bugti, Baluchistan's chief minister, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of life and mandated the provision of top-tier medical care to those injured.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi conveyed their condolences through separate statements, mourning the tragic fatalities. The incident sheds light on the grim reality of road safety in Pakistan, where adherence to traffic regulations and safety standards remains sporadic, particularly on challenging terrains.
This latest calamity unfolds merely three days following another fatal accident in Multan, Punjab province, where 13 individuals from a single family lost their lives in a collision between a van and a truck. Earlier this month, a similar crash claimed the lives of 20 individuals and left 30 others injured, further underscoring the persistent challenges surrounding road safety in the region.
