Kathmandu, Nepal: A tragic incident has claimed the lives of five Russian mountaineers while they were attempting to climb Dhaulagiri, the seventh-highest mountain in the world. According to Rakesh Gurung from Nepal's tourism department, the team lost contact late on the evening of October 6 during their ascent of the 8,167-meter (26,795-foot) peak.

Gurung confirmed the grim news, stating, "Five dead bodies were discovered by a helicopter rescue team. They fell from an altitude of 7,700 meters." This discovery came just two days after the climbers were reported missing.

One climber who had abandoned the summit attempt was successfully rescued and has since been admitted to a hospital in the capital, Kathmandu, where he is receiving treatment.

Every year, hundreds of climbers from around the globe venture to the Himalayas during the autumn climbing season in Nepal. The country boasts eight of the world's 14 tallest peaks, making it a premier destination for mountaineering enthusiasts.

While the influx of foreign climbers significantly contributes to Nepal's economy, there are growing concerns about safety standards in the rapidly expanding climbing industry. The fierce competition among trekking companies for business has led to fears that some may be compromising safety measures to attract more clients.

Dhaulagiri, first successfully scaled in 1960 by a Swiss-Austrian expedition, has since been climbed by numerous adventurers, further solidifying its status as a challenging and popular peak among mountaineers.

As the climbing season continues, the authorities are urged to review safety protocols to ensure the well-being of climbers navigating the treacherous Himalayan terrain.
