On Thursday, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in response to the recent vandalism at the facility. This visit came shortly after the discovery of the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor, which has ignited widespread protests and demands for justice from the medical community.
During his visit, Governor Bose met with junior doctors who had been demonstrating following the discovery of the body of their colleague. The governor reassured them of his support, stating, "I am with you and we will work together to solve this. I promise you justice. My ears and eyes are open."

The situation at RG Kar Medical College escalated on Wednesday night when a violent mob attacked and vandalized the emergency ward and other areas of the hospital. The intensity of the vandalism led protesters to pause their demonstration to ensure the safety of female doctors participating in the protests. Police intervention, including the use of tear gas, was required to disperse the mob.
As the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case, here are the top 10 developments so far:
Accused and Crime: Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, is in CBI custody for the murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Her body was discovered last Friday.
CBI Investigation: The CBI is pursuing a comprehensive investigation strategy. This includes a detailed examination of the crime scene, preparation for court proceedings, and coordination with local police.
Forensic Evidence: The CBI's Special Crime Unit is analyzing forensic evidence from the seminar hall, including fingerprints, footprints, hair samples, and semen, to link Roy to the crime.
Allegations of Gang-Rape: The victim's parents allege gang-rape, supported by forensic findings indicating 150 mg of semen in her body, suggesting multiple perpetrators.
Timeline of Events: According to the autopsy report, the victim suffered multiple injuries and was smothered to death between 3 and 5 am on the day of the incident.
Initial Misreporting: The Calcutta High Court is investigating why the murder was initially reported as a suicide and the delays in police involvement.
Ongoing Doctor Protests: Protesting doctors are demanding a Central Healthcare Protection Act to improve safety measures for medical personnel. Although the Federation of Resident Doctors' Associations (FORDA) has called off the strike, protests continue in various medical institutions.
Pressure for Arrests: The victim's parents have criticized the lack of arrests for possible accomplices, underscoring the complexity of the crime and the likelihood of multiple perpetrators.
Legislative Demands: While 19 states have laws protecting doctors, medical professionals are calling for uniform national legislation to ensure consistent protection across the country.
Principal Accused of Victim Blaming: Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former head of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, faced backlash for victim-blaming comments and inadequate safety measures. After initially resigning, he was unexpectedly reinstated as Principal of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.
Governor Bose's visit and the ongoing developments reflect the urgency and complexity of addressing the grievances raised by the medical community and ensuring justice for the victim.
