Tinder, Dating Apps Face Addiction Lawsuit Allegations

Post by: Dr. Amrinder Pal Singh

Six users of dating apps like Tinder and Hinge have filed a lawsuit in San Francisco, alleging that these platforms are intentionally designed to create addiction. The complaint targets Match Group Inc, the Dallas-based company that owns several dating platforms. In a 58-page document filed on Valentine's Day, the users argue that these apps have transformed social dynamics, replacing traditional courtship with technology.

According to the complaint, online dating has provided a convenient way for people to seek connections through relationships, but at a significant cost. The users claim that the apps are deliberately designed to be addictive. They accuse Match Group of representing the platforms as effective tools for establishing off-app relationships while secretly prioritizing the retention of paying subscribers.

The lawsuit asserts that Match's apps use dopamine-manipulating features to turn users into gamblers in a quest for psychological rewards, fostering dating app addiction that drives expensive subscriptions and constant usage. Examples of such tactics mentioned in the document include "push notifications" and incentive rewards.

In response, Match Group dismissed the lawsuit as "ridiculous" and lacking merit. A company spokesperson emphasized that their business model is not based on advertising or engagement metrics, and they actively aim to facilitate real-world dates, encouraging users to move off the apps.

All six individuals involved in the lawsuit had purchased subscriptions to Tinder and Hinge.
