In a tragic incident in Argentina, a boarding house in Buenos Aires became the scene of a horrific hate crime targeting two lesbian couples. On May 6, a man identified as Justo Fernando Barrientos threw a Molotov cocktail into their room, igniting a deadly fire.
The consequences were devastating. Pamela Fabiana Cobas suffered severe burns and tragically succumbed to her injuries almost immediately. Her partner, Mercedes Roxana Figueroa, battled for two days but ultimately passed away due to organ failure caused by burns covering 90% of her body. Andrea Amarante, the third woman involved, also lost her life, passing away in the hospital on May 12.
Sofia Castroriglos Riglos, the fourth woman, survived the ordeal but remains hospitalized, with hopes for her recovery.

Eyewitnesses and fellow lodgers at the boarding house revealed that Barrientos had a history of abusing and threatening the victims because of their sexual orientation. His actions were deliberate and fueled by hatred.
The attack sparked outrage and condemnation from LGBTQ organizations across Argentina, who labeled it a heinous hate crime. The Argentine LGBT Federation issued a statement denouncing the attack as one of the most abhorrent incidents of recent years, attributing it to a culture of violence and discrimination perpetuated by hate speech, even endorsed by some government officials.
Efforts to reach out to the victims' families and friends are ongoing, with support and assistance pledged by LGBTQ organizations. They are committed to standing by the victims, advocating for justice, and closely monitoring the legal proceedings to ensure accountability.
In response to the tragedy, a protest was organized outside Argentina's National Congress building on May 10, demanding justice for the victims and highlighting the urgent need to address hate crimes and discrimination against the LGBTQ community.
