Bangkok: The release of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, currently serving a jail term, is set for Sunday, according to an announcement by the country's prime minister, Srettha Thavisin. Thaksin, a controversial billionaire and a two-time elected prime minister, returned to Thailand just six months ago after spending 15 years in self-imposed exile. Originally sentenced to eight years on charges of graft and abuse of power upon his return in August, his sentence was swiftly reduced to one year by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, raising eyebrows and sparking speculation about potential political dealings.
Speaking to reporters before boarding a flight on Saturday, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin emphasized that Thaksin's release would be conducted "according to the rule of law," but specific details about the terms of his release remain unclear. It is suggested that Thaksin might be subject to monitoring, potentially including an ankle tag, and could face restrictions on his right to travel.
Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong had earlier stated that Thaksin, aged 74, would be part of a group of 930 prisoners granted early release, citing reasons such as critical health conditions or age over 70. Thaksin's health became a focal point when, shortly after his sentencing, he was transferred to a police hospital. Reports suggested he suffered from chest tightness and high blood pressure, and he reportedly underwent two operations in the following months.
The circumstances surrounding Thaksin's return and imprisonment have been marked by controversy. His Pheu Thai party coincidentally returned to government in alliance with pro-military parties, leading to speculation that a behind-the-scenes agreement had been reached to reduce his jail time. Thaksin's transfer to a police hospital immediately after sentencing also fueled rumors about the nature of his incarceration, with doubts arising about whether he had spent any time in a traditional prison cell.
Supporters gathered outside Thaksin's Bangkok home in anticipation of his release, underscoring the enduring influence he holds, particularly among rural Thais who appreciate his populist policies from the early 2000s. Thaksin remains a divisive figure in Thai politics, drawing admiration from some and scorn from others, particularly within the royalist and pro-military establishment. His daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who currently heads the Pheu Thai party, welcomed the news earlier in the week, expressing that it was "time for him to live the rest of his life happily." She shared a video on Instagram showing Thaksin's grandchildren preparing a welcome-home banner. The legacy and impact of the former telecoms tycoon continue to shape modern Thai history.
