Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to take a proactive role in resolving the ongoing civil war in Myanmar. Speaking on Monday, ahead of a summit of the ten-member bloc scheduled to take place in Laos this week, she emphasized the need for urgent action to restore peace in the troubled nation.
Since the military coup in February 2021, which ousted the elected civilian government, Myanmar has been engulfed in chaos. The coup ignited widespread protests that escalated into an armed rebellion against the military junta, plunging the country into a prolonged conflict.
During an event in Bangkok, Paetongtarn stated, "ASEAN must play an important role in bringing peace back to Myanmar as soon as possible." She highlighted Thailand's commitment to collaborate with Malaysia, which will assume the ASEAN chair next year, to pursue diplomatic avenues for conflict resolution. This reflects a potential renewed effort by the regional bloc to address the crisis as its leaders prepare for their annual summit on Wednesday.

Paetongtarn's predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, had previously mentioned in April that the Myanmar military junta appeared to be weakening, suggesting there could be an opportunity for dialogue. He remarked, "Maybe it's time to reach out and make a deal."
However, progress on the ASEAN-led peace initiative known as the Five Point Consensus, introduced in April 2021, has been limited. Despite ongoing calls for dialogue, the junta has refused to engage with opposition groups, labeling them as terrorists intent on destabilizing the country. The prolonged conflict has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with one-third of Myanmar's 55 million population in need of assistance.
At the upcoming Laos summit, the humanitarian situation in Myanmar is expected to be a significant topic of discussion. ASEAN has barred the junta's leadership from its summits due to their failure to adhere to the agreed-upon peace plan, which has caused frustration among the bloc's key members.
In a related move, Indonesia recently hosted an international meeting that included representatives from the United Nations and opponents of Myanmar's military regime, further highlighting the urgency and complexity of the situation in Myanmar.
