Texas Swelters as Western US and Canada Brace for Heightened Wildfire Threat Due to Scorching Heat

Millions of Texans faced severe heat without air conditioning following Tropical Storm Beryl's widespread power outages. The storm's impact extended to the Western US and Canada, exacerbating wildfire risks.

In southeast Texas, approximately 2 million homes and businesses endured temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 C) on Tuesday as power remained out due to Tropical Storm Beryl. The storm, which struck on Monday, caused flooding, property damage, and downed power lines, resulting in seven fatalities in Texas alone, including deaths from fallen trees, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. Beryl had previously claimed 11 lives in the Caribbean before making landfall in the US.

Although downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone as it moved through the Midwest, Beryl continued to pose threats of flash flooding and tornadoes into Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

In Houston, Raymond Miller, 46, described his discomfort without electricity, lamenting spoiled food and unbearable humidity that made sleeping difficult. With no available gas to power his vehicle's air conditioning, he sought relief amid shortages affecting the region.

Across the US, heat advisories covered approximately 128 million people, with record-high temperatures forecasted from Seattle to California and Arizona. The Mojave Desert recorded a scorching 129 F (54 C), while cities like Las Vegas and Phoenix exceeded 110 F (43 C). In Canada, the heat wave increased wildfire risks across western provinces, prompting heat warnings and concerns about dry lightning sparking fires.

Environment Canada reported significant wildfire activity in Alberta and British Columbia, where the village of Lytton, ravaged by wildfires in 2021, recorded temperatures reaching 39 C (102 F). As temperatures fluctuate, authorities remain vigilant amid escalating environmental and human health risks posed by the ongoing heat wave and wildfire threats.
