Jaylen Rushawn Prince, a 16-year-old student, was apprehended on Friday, September 6, following a fatal shooting at Joppatowne High School. Prince is charged as an adult with murder, first and second-degree assault, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony or violent crime, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting occurred in the school bathroom, where Prince allegedly shot and killed his 15-year-old classmate, Warren Curtis Grant. Authorities discovered Prince attempting to break into a nearby apartment to evade capture shortly after the incident.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear. However, it is known that Prince and Grant were acquainted. Reports indicate that the shooting followed a confrontation between the two, marking Prince’s first day at Joppatowne High School since the beginning of the school year.

Following the shooting, fellow students dragged Grant into the hallway, where he received initial aid from school nurses. He was subsequently airlifted to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where he later died from his injuries.
Prince initially fled the scene but was apprehended by police around 12:50 p.m. Authorities have revealed that Prince had prior interactions with law enforcement, including over ten incidents since 2022 in which he was listed as a victim, witness, or suspect. The firearm used in the shooting has not yet been recovered.
This tragic incident comes in the wake of another school shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, which occurred earlier this week. In that incident, a 14-year-old student, Colt Gray, is in custody and facing murder charges. The shooting resulted in the deaths of two students and two teachers. The victims were identified as math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie, and students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, all 14 years old. Additionally, at least nine others were injured in the attack.
The string of violent incidents has heightened concerns about school safety and the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing such crises
