The recent pronouncements by Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the leader of the Taliban, indicate a concerning regression for Afghanistan. In a voice message broadcast on state television, Akhundzada declared a return to brutal practices, including public floggings and stonings for adultery, invoking the strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law that characterized the Taliban's previous rule.

Expressing a staunch opposition to Western notions of women's rights, Akhundzada dismissed international concerns, affirming the Taliban's commitment to implementing Sharia law regardless of external pressures. His statements underscore the Taliban's rejection of democratic values and their determination to enforce their version of Islamic law.
The US-led intervention in 2001 ousted the Taliban from power, but their resurgence following the collapse of the Western-backed government has led to a reinstatement of their oppressive policies. This has sparked outrage among Afghans, particularly women, who fear a return to the dark ages of Taliban rule.
Former civil servant Tala echoed these sentiments, describing a pervasive atmosphere of fear and oppression for women in Afghanistan. Despite promises of a more moderate approach, the Taliban's actions have proven otherwise, with a rapid reversion to draconian punishments reminiscent of their previous regime.
The international community, including the United Nations, has condemned the Taliban's actions and called for an end to these egregious violations of human rights. However, the Taliban's defiance suggests a grim reality for the future of Afghanistan, with women once again facing the prospect of living under oppressive conditions akin to a prison.
