Taiwan Again Denies South Africa's Request to Relocate Its Representative Office

Taiwan has once again turned down South Africa's request to relocate its representative office from Pretoria to Johannesburg. During a news conference on Tuesday, Taiwan's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jeff Liu stated that the demand contradicts a 1997 agreement regarding the established locations of their mutual representative offices, which was made after formal diplomatic relations were severed.

Liu emphasized that Taiwan cannot acquiesce to such "unreasonable" demands, asserting that the representative office in Pretoria is Taiwanese property, and thus, Taipei maintains the right to decide its location and status. He reiterated remarks made by Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung in the legislature on Monday, which stated that Taiwan is prepared for any eventualities concerning this issue.

South Africa operates a liaison office in Taiwan's capital, Taipei, and both sides enjoy a strong commercial relationship. However, South Africa's recent demand for the office's relocation is perceived as a concession to China, which regards Taiwan as a part of its territory and exerts considerable pressure to reduce Taiwan's international representation. China has actively sought to limit Taiwan's formal diplomatic partners, which currently stand at just 11 countries and the Vatican, while simultaneously isolating it from international organizations like the United Nations and the World Health Organization.

This demand from South Africa has garnered attention from U.S. lawmakers. Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, voiced her concerns on the social media platform X, stating that the United States should not tolerate South Africa's actions that align with China's pressure on Taiwan. She urged the Biden administration to take a firm stance against such behavior and warned that there could be consequences, including the potential removal of South Africa from key U.S. trade programs. Blackburn emphasized that the U.S. should not extend trade benefits to nations that prioritize Chinese influence over democratic partnerships.

As tensions mount, China has intensified its military threats against Taiwan, recently conducting large-scale live-fire drills off the coast of Fujian Province, which faces Taiwan. The geopolitical landscape surrounding Taiwan remains precarious, with ongoing challenges to its international presence and diplomatic relations.
