Suicide Bombing in Kabul Kills 6 and Injuries 13

Photo : Reuters

On Monday, a suicide bomber detonated explosives in the Qala-e-Bakhtiar area of southern Kabul, Afghanistan, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals, including a woman, and injuring 13 others. All the injured, who were civilians, were rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

Local police and the Ministry of Interior Affairs have confirmed the details of the attack, but no group has yet claimed responsibility. The Taliban has maintained control over Afghanistan since 2021, leading to a decrease in overall violence. However, the ISIL (ISIS) affiliate in Khorasan Province continues to pose a significant threat, frequently targeting civilians, foreign nationals, and Taliban officials.

The Khorasan Province affiliate of ISIL remains one of the most dangerous groups in Afghanistan and has a history of attacks against Shia communities. One of the deadliest incidents linked to this group occurred in 2022 when a suicide bombing at an education center in Kabul resulted in the deaths of at least 53 people, including 46 girls and young women.

The most recent ISIL-claimed suicide attack in Afghanistan took place in March in the city of Kandahar. Despite Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid's assertions that ISIL has been "suppressed very hard" and that no significant threats remain in the country, Monday’s bombing highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Afghanistan. An investigation into the attack is currently underway.
