Student Arrested Over Controversial Post About Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: Kirti Sharma, a second-year BCom student, has been arrested by Kolkata Police following a controversial social media post that allegedly incited violence against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Sharma, who used the Instagram handle "kirtisocial," is accused of posting inflammatory content urging others to assassinate Banerjee in a manner reminiscent of the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The arrest comes amid heightened tensions in Kolkata, particularly surrounding a brutal case of rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. On August 9, a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead, leading to widespread outrage and media attention. Sharma’s posts not only included threats against Banerjee but also allegedly revealed the identity and photograph of the murder victim, sparking further controversy.

The Kolkata Police issued a statement outlining the gravity of Sharma's actions: "A complaint was filed against the individual operating under the Instagram ID 'kirtisocial' for uploading three stories related to the recent tragedy at RG Kar Hospital. These posts disclosed the victim’s photograph and identity, which is highly offensive and inappropriate. Additionally, the accused made two separate stories containing provocative comments and threats against the Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal. Such comments are likely to incite social unrest and foster communal hatred."

This incident is part of a broader crackdown by the Kolkata Police on inflammatory social media posts related to the rape-murder case. In recent developments, summons were issued to Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray after he publicly called for a CBI inquiry into the actions of the Kolkata Police Commissioner. Former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and two prominent doctors have also been summoned for allegedly spreading rumors and disclosing the victim's identity, further compounding the tense situation.

The police's swift action underscores the increasing scrutiny and regulation of social media content in the face of sensitive and potentially incendiary issues.
