Rescue operations in the Philippines intensified on Sunday as authorities searched for dozens of missing individuals following the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Trami. The storm, which struck on October 24, has been classified as one of the deadliest weather events in the country this year, with the confirmed death toll reaching 100.
The national disaster agency reported that over half a million people were forced to evacuate their homes due to the storm's severe impact. Many residents in the hardest-hit regions remain in precarious situations, trapped on rooftops or in upper floors of buildings inundated by floodwaters.
In the Bicol region, where the devastation was most pronounced, police have recorded 38 fatalities, primarily attributed to drowning. The provincial police chief, Andre Dizon, expressed ongoing concerns, stating, "We are still receiving many calls, and we are trying to save as many people as we can. Hopefully, there will be no more deaths." He added that numerous residents remain stranded, awaiting rescue.

In Batangas province, located south of Manila, the death toll has escalated to 55. Additionally, two individuals were confirmed dead in separate incidents of electrocution and drowning in Cavite province. Rescue teams have discovered over 20 bodies from the debris of landslides, boulders, and fallen trees, while police continue to report at least another 20 individuals still unaccounted for in the area.
Edgar Posadas of the Civil Defence Office indicated that the death toll could rise further in the coming days as rescue teams gain access to previously isolated communities. Ongoing searches at Taal Lake are focused on locating a family of seven believed to have been swept away when their home was engulfed by floodwaters.
The national disaster agency has confirmed that approximately 560,000 individuals have been displaced as a result of the flooding, which has submerged hundreds of villages in northern regions of the Philippines.
The country is vulnerable to severe storms, with an average of 20 typhoons and storms impacting the archipelago annually. These weather events often result in significant damage to infrastructure, homes, and loss of life. A recent study highlighted that storms in the Asia-Pacific region are increasingly forming closer to coastlines, intensifying more rapidly, and lasting longer over land due to the effects of climate change.
