Sri Lanka continues to grapple with the aftermath of severe monsoonal showers that have wreaked havoc across the country since May 15. State Minister of Defence Premitha Bandara Tennakoon informed Parliament on Wednesday that the death toll has climbed to 30 due to the extreme weather conditions.
The heavy rains have left a trail of destruction, with 71 houses completely destroyed and another 9,300 suffering partial damage. Additionally, 825 small and medium-scale industries have been adversely affected, along with 63 infrastructure system setups, as stated by Tannakoon.
The fatalities have been reported from 10 districts, including the capital Colombo, where torrential rains exceeding 300 mm triggered flash floods, fallen trees, high winds, lightning, and earth slips.

Flood warnings have been issued for the basins of several rivers across different districts, with expectations of more rains and high winds. The National Building Research Centre has issued earth slip red notices for four districts as a precautionary measure.
As a result of the adverse weather conditions, schools were closed on Monday, and over 5,000 people were relocated to evacuation centers. Rescue operations, including deployment of navy and army troops, have been initiated to provide assistance to the affected areas, distributing food and essential items.
Authorities have reported that more than 19,000 individuals from over 5,000 families were stranded over the weekend as severe monsoonal downpours caused widespread devastation across 20 of the 25 administrative districts severely affected by the calamity.
