The Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 11 Indian fishermen for allegedly fishing illegally in Sri Lankan waters, escalating the total number of Indian fishermen detained this year to 333. The latest arrests occurred off the coast of Point Pedro in Jaffna, a region in Sri Lanka’s northern province.
According to a press release from the Sri Lankan Navy, the fishermen were detained on Friday, and their trawler was seized. The individuals have been brought to the Kankesanthurai fishing harbor for further proceedings.
This recent incident increases the total number of Indian trawlers seized by the Sri Lankan Navy this year to 45. The ongoing issue highlights the tense relations between India and Sri Lanka over fishing rights in the Palk Strait, a vital fishing area that separates Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has expressed growing concern over the frequent arrests. In a letter to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Stalin noted the alarming rate of such incidents, citing that in 2024 alone, the Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 324 fishermen and seized 44 boats. Stalin emphasized the severe impact these actions have on the livelihoods of Tamil Nadu’s fishing community.
The arrests are part of a broader and contentious issue between the two nations, with incidents including the firing upon Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan naval personnel and the seizure of their boats. The Palk Strait remains a point of conflict, with fishermen from both countries occasionally straying into each other’s territorial waters.
The situation underscores the ongoing challenges in managing maritime borders and the need for effective diplomatic engagement to resolve such disputes.
