Sri Lanka Arrests 23 Indian Fishermen for Poaching Offenses

The Sri Lanka Navy executed a targeted operation to expel Indian poaching trawlers from Sri Lankan waters on the night of February 3, 2024," stated a press release from the Sri Lanka Navy on Sunday. PTI File

The Sri Lankan Navy has taken action against alleged poaching by Indian fishermen, arresting 23 individuals and seizing two trawlers near Delft Island, Jaffna. The operation, conducted on February 3, 2024, aimed to prevent incursions into Sri Lankan waters. The detained fishermen and confiscated trawlers were escorted to Kankesanthurai Harbour for further legal proceedings under the supervision of the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector.

The Sri Lanka Navy, as part of routine patrols, works to curb illegal fishing by foreign trawlers, recognizing the impact on the livelihoods of local fishermen. The Northern Naval Command, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Coast Guard, deployed Fast Attack Craft to deter a group of Indian poaching trawlers detected engaging in illegal fishing.

Fishing-related issues strain relations between India and Sri Lanka, with instances of Sri Lankan Navy personnel firing at Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait. This narrow waterway, separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, is a crucial fishing ground for both nations. Incidents of Indian fishermen allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in Sri Lankan waters are not uncommon.

In January, 36 Indian fishermen were arrested by Sri Lanka, and in 2023, 240 Indian fishermen and 35 trawlers faced detainment for alleged poaching. The ongoing arrests highlight the persistent challenges in managing fishing disputes and maintaining maritime boundaries between the two countries
