South Korea's '4B' movement, a radical feminist initiative focused on resisting traditional relationships with men, has recently begun to gain traction in the United States. Sparked by concerns over women's rights following political shifts, including Donald Trump’s tenure as President, a number of American women are now openly discussing "swearing off men" on social media platforms.
The '4B' movement, which stands for "no marriage, no childbirth, no dating, and no heterosexual relationships," emerged in South Korea around 2017-2018, gaining popularity on X (formerly known as Twitter) in 2019. The movement was created as a response to widespread issues of violence and inequality against women in South Korea. Many women in the movement refuse to participate in traditional relationships with men as a form of protest, aiming to challenge patriarchal norms and bring attention to issues affecting women’s safety and autonomy. By opting out of heterosexual relationships, some advocates say they are sending a message: unless women’s rights and safety improve, they are prepared to make a lasting impact on society by influencing birth rates.

The movement resonates with American women today amid concerns over reproductive rights. Following Donald Trump’s election and the 2022 Supreme Court ruling that ended the nationwide right to abortion, many fear for the future of women's rights in the United States. While Trump has since stated he would leave abortion decisions to individual states rather than impose a federal ban, many women remain anxious about the erosion of their bodily autonomy.
Women in the US who are embracing '4B' ideals express fatigue over waiting for political stability regarding their rights. On social media, many echo sentiments of the movement by advocating for a life independent of men, discussing how society’s expectations often confine women. A user on X recently voiced, "Ladies, it's time to close off your wombs to males. This election shows now more than ever that they hate us. Do not reward them." Another user added that the '4B' movement is not only about avoiding men but also about investing in and supporting women-led initiatives, encouraging others to engage in relationships, businesses, and media that uplift women.
For some women, the '4B' movement offers a sense of solidarity and a platform for open discussion about life in a male-dominated society. In South Korea, the movement has fostered both online and offline communities where women explore how to live independently of traditional roles. "We want to be seen as complete individuals, free from the confines of labels like 'wife' or 'girlfriend.' It’s about creating a safe community where women can reach their full potential," South Korean activist Haein Shim shared in an interview with The Guardian.
Despite growing interest, reactions in the US remain mixed. While some women embrace the movement’s message, others question its feasibility or believe it may not fully resonate in the American cultural landscape. The '4B' movement, however, continues to spark conversations about gender equality, societal expectations, and the future of women's rights on both sides of the Pacific.
