South Africa is urging the International Court of Justice in The Hague to take immediate action against Israel over its recent military actions in the Gaza city of Rafah. This is the third time South Africa has asked for emergency measures against Israel since December. Israel strongly rejects South Africa's accusation of "genocide" in Palestinian territories.
According to South Africa's application, Israel's operation in Rafah poses a serious threat to humanitarian aid and essential services in Gaza. They accuse Israel of violating the Genocide Convention and call for an immediate halt to the military offensive.
South Africa demands that Israel allow unhindered access to Gaza for the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations. Israel launched the offensive against Hamas after attacks on October 7 resulted in civilian deaths. The conflict has claimed thousands of lives, with many casualties on both sides.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justifies the offensive as necessary to defeat Hamas. The situation in Rafah is dire, with many displaced Palestinians living in precarious conditions. There are fears that a ground offensive by Israel could worsen the humanitarian crisis.
In previous instances, the International Court of Justice called on Israel to prevent acts of genocide. However, the court rejected South Africa's previous request for emergency measures over Israel's threat to attack Rafah. The court's orders are binding, but there is no direct enforcement mechanism.
This situation underscores the ongoing conflict in the region and the international community's efforts to address humanitarian concerns and promote peace.
