The Wimbledon Tennis Championships are known for tradition, elegance, and world-class tennis. But this year, the spotlight seems to have shifted. Pictures and videos of celebrities attending the tournament went viral on social media, not for their love of the sport—but for their glamorous outfits and red carpet poses.
Many fans admired this fusion of tennis and fashion, calling it "desi pride" on global turf. But not everyone was happy. Singer and actress Sophie Choudry recently voiced her disappointment over this growing trend. She shared a heartfelt note on her Instagram Stories, and her words have sparked debate across social platforms.
Sophie’s Passion For Tennis
Sophie Choudry, 43, is not just a performer—she’s also a long-time tennis fan. In her Instagram note shared on Thursday, July 15, she expressed her deep emotional connection to the sport.

"I have been an avid tennis lover for more than 30 years," she wrote. "Have literally shed tears of joy and pain over my favourites – Sampras (a legit obsession at one time), Agassi, Nadal and now Alcaraz."
Sophie explained how tennis has always been close to her heart. Even while studying for school exams, she made sure to catch important matches. One of her most cherished memories is watching tennis legend Martina Navratilova play her last Wimbledon final in person.
She added, “I’ve seen some epic matches before the time when everything turned into an Insta post.”
Her Criticism of Celebrity Obsession With Fashion
In her note, Sophie shared her frustration over how Wimbledon is slowly being turned into a fashion stage instead of a place to appreciate athletic excellence.
She said, “Oh Lord. Please do not let Wimbledon become the next Cannes.”
Her message clearly pointed out that some people are using the Wimbledon event just for social media appearances. “This year, I am suddenly seeing countless ‘influencers', ‘celebs' from India going there just to be seen,” she wrote.
Without naming anyone specifically, Sophie expressed that some of these public figures seem to have “zero clue or interest” in the game or the players. “I am not denying that some genuinely love the game,” she noted, “but many are there just to pose for social media.”
She ended her message by pleading with fans and influencers not to ruin the spirit of one of the “most beautiful tournaments in the world.”
What Did Others Say? Sonam Kapoor Had A Different View
While Sophie voiced concern, other celebrities felt differently. In fact, actress Sonam Kapoor had a very positive reaction to seeing Indians at Wimbledon.
An Instagram page called Diet Sabya, known for its fashion critiques, had shared images of celebrities attending the tournament. Under one such post, Sonam Kapoor commented, “Love the captions! Indians everywhere. So good na?”
This simple but cheerful reply shows how proud she feels about Indian celebrities making their presence felt on the global stage—even if it’s through fashion.
Who All Attended Wimbledon 2025?
Wimbledon 2025 saw a massive turnout of well-known Indian personalities. The guest list read like the who's who of Bollywood and Indian pop culture. Some of the most talked-about couples and stars spotted at the event included:
Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas
Parineeti Chopra and Raghav Chadha
Farhan Akhtar and Shibani Dandekar
Janhvi Kapoor
Sonam Kapoor
Preity Zinta
Urvashi Rautela
Their photos went viral across Instagram, Twitter, and news portals. While many fans admired their fashion choices, others questioned whether these celebrities were truly interested in tennis or just attending for the limelight.
The Final Match: A Tennis Showdown To Remember
While all this buzz was going on around the stands, the tennis court itself witnessed some amazing action. The Wimbledon 2025 finals featured a tough and thrilling match between Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner eventually won the match, beating Alcaraz in a nail-biting contest filled with long rallies and powerful serves. This final kept true tennis lovers glued to their screens and reminded everyone of the true purpose of Wimbledon.
A Unique Indian Touch: Wimbledon Honors Indian Cinema
In a surprise cultural moment, Wimbledon paid tribute to Indian cinema during the finals. The tournament honored South Indian superstar Thalapathy Vijay and celebrated his upcoming film Jana Nayagan.
This gesture showed how Indian influence is growing not only in fashion or entertainment but also on prestigious global platforms like Wimbledon. For some, this fusion of sport and culture was a proud moment, while for others like Sophie, it felt like a distraction from the sport itself.
What This Debate Really Means
Sophie Choudry’s comments have opened up a wider discussion. On one side are fans like her—people who have followed tennis for decades and see Wimbledon as sacred ground for sports. They feel that the sudden wave of social media influencers and celebs is changing the essence of the tournament.
On the other hand, some believe that having celebrities attend and post about Wimbledon helps bring global attention and pride to Indian representation. People like Sonam Kapoor see it as a sign of progress—that Indians now shine on every global stage, including the elite stands of Wimbledon.
Whether you agree with Sophie or Sonam, one thing is clear—Wimbledon 2025 has become more than just a tennis tournament. It’s now a platform where fashion, culture, fame, and sport meet.
For die-hard tennis fans, the challenge will be to make sure the game still stays at the heart of it all.
As Sophie said, “Please let us not ruin one of the most beautiful tournaments in the world.”
