The Smithtown Library, a repository of invaluable historical documents, has suffered severe damage due to the catastrophic floods that hit Long Island nearly two weeks ago. Security camera footage reveals that the library’s lowest level was inundated by powerful floodwaters, leading to extensive damage. Authorities estimate the financial loss at around $10 million, with the basement unlikely to reopen before early 2025.
The footage captures the moment floodwaters breached a wall and overwhelmed the entire bottom floor, destroying books, equipment, and DVDs. Eileen Caulfield, the library's Assistant Director, described the scene to FOX 5, saying, “I saw my belongings, desk, conference table, and purse being carried out into the hallway.”
Library Director Rob Lusak recounted the harrowing experience, noting that “the water literally filled up to the ceiling on Monday.” He explained that the pressure of the incoming water shattered a double-hung window, and the staff could not access the lower level until late in the afternoon. Recovery efforts began at 4:40 p.m. that day.

The floods also caused significant damage to the Long Island Historical Room Collection, often regarded as the library’s “crown jewel.” This collection includes 17th-century documents, such as the town's original deed and paperwork signed by Thomas Jefferson, which are now at risk of being lost.
In response to the crisis, the Smithtown Library has shared distressing footage of the damage on X, calling for public support and donations. Meanwhile, with the library still without electricity as of August 27, staff members have been relocated to nearby libraries in King Park, Nesconset, and Commack, which were less affected by the storm.
Flood remediation efforts are underway, with Rainbow Restoration and the Smithtown Fire Department working to pump out the water from the building. The response has been bolstered by recent developments: Governor Kathy Hochul's federal emergency declaration, approved on Sunday, and Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine's State of Emergency Declaration from August 19 have facilitated direct federal aid through FEMA. This support aims to protect essential infrastructure such as roads and bridges.
Director Lusak noted that the necessary paperwork has been completed and the library's insurer has been informed. “We are cleaning up, and we will rebuild. Better than ever,” Lusak affirmed, expressing hope for recovery and restoration.
