Viral Video Shows Driver Asleep at 100 kmph on Manali Road

A major road tragedy was narrowly avoided on the Chandigarh–Manali highway after a driver was caught on camera apparently fast asleep while his car continued at speeds of nearly 100 kmph.

The incident came to light after a passing motorist recorded a video that has since gone viral on social media. The footage shows a white sedan drifting across lanes on the mountain-bound highway, while the driver sits slumped in his seat, unresponsive to traffic and road conditions.

Witnesses Attempt to Prevent Disaster

According to the video, a truck driver travelling alongside the sedan noticed the driver’s alarming condition and attempted to intervene. The truck driver can be heard repeatedly honking his air horn and shouting in an effort to wake the man. Despite the loud warnings, the driver appeared to remain in deep sleep for several kilometres, with his head tilted back as the car continued moving at high speed.

The incident reportedly occurred on a relatively quiet stretch of the highway, which may have helped prevent a serious collision.

Commercial Vehicle, Fatigue Under Scrutiny

The car was seen carrying commercial registration plates, though it is not yet clear whether the driver was operating a taxi or working under a transport company. Authorities have not confirmed where or how the vehicle was eventually stopped.

Road safety experts say the footage highlights the growing issue of driver fatigue, especially among commercial operators who often face long hours, tight schedules and limited rest.

Experts Warn of ‘Silent Killer’ on Roads

“Drowsy driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving,” a road safety consultant said. “Even a few seconds of microsleep at highway speeds can lead to fatal accidents.”

Calls for Stronger Enforcement

While local police have not issued an official statement so far, the incident has triggered widespread discussion online, with many demanding stricter enforcement of rest rules for commercial drivers to prevent such near-misses from turning deadly.

The viral video now stands as a stark reminder of the urgent need for better monitoring, awareness and enforcement to ensure safer highways.
