Kyiv, Ukraine - In a significant development, the Ukrainian SBU security service announced on Wednesday the detention of six individuals accused of aiding Russia in striking an apartment building in the eastern Donetsk region. These detainees have been promptly charged with treason in connection with the attack.
The incident in question occurred on August 7, 2023, when Russian Iskander missiles targeted the city of Pokrovsk. The resulting strike claimed the lives of nine individuals and left dozens more injured, causing extensive damage to a residential block.
According to the SBU, the operation to apprehend the suspects involved neutralizing a group of Russian military intelligence agents operating within the Donetsk region. The six detained individuals were allegedly recruited by a handler associated with Russian military intelligence through pro-Kremlin Telegram channels.

Furthermore, the SBU revealed that the accused were involved in preparing coordinates for missile strikes on Ukrainian bases near Avdiivka. Notably, Avdiivka had fallen under Russian control following intense combat in February.
All six detainees have been formally charged with high treason and now face the prospect of life imprisonment, as per the SBU statement.
This development underscores Kyiv's concerted efforts to crack down on individuals suspected of collaborating with Russian forces since the onset of conflict in February 2022, particularly in regions across the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine.
The United Nations has previously reported that Ukraine has initiated over 6,600 criminal cases against individuals for various offenses related to collaboration and other conflict-related crimes since the outbreak of hostilities.
