Sisi Unveils 'National Smart Cities' and 'Green Urbanism' Initiatives at WUF12

During the opening ceremony of the 12th edition of the World Urban Forum (WUF12) in Cairo, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi unveiled the ambitious "National Smart Cities" and "National Green Urbanism" strategies. These initiatives are designed to bolster ongoing national efforts in urban development and address the pressing challenges of urbanization in Egypt.

In his address, President El-Sisi underscored the significance of WUF12, stating that it convenes during a pivotal moment as the world faces a series of global crises, including destructive wars that have far-reaching impacts on cities and urban communities. He pointed out that these crises affect every aspect of life, exacerbating the difficulties faced by nations.

El-Sisi highlighted the urgent need to mobilize collective efforts and demonstrate political will to establish peace, end conflicts, and prioritize sustainable development, reconstruction, and rebuilding efforts. He articulated, "Only then can we embark on serious endeavors to address urban challenges in societies ravaged by wars, fighting, displacement, famine, and disease." His remarks call for a comprehensive response to the interconnected issues facing urban areas.

Drawing attention to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, particularly in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, El-Sisi reflected on the stark realities these nations face due to their choices of conflict over peace. He stated, "The daily suffering endured by the peoples of these countries necessitates urgent and vigorous response to end the bloodshed and destruction and embark on reconstruction and development." His message was clear: the toll of war emphasizes the critical need for a shift towards peaceful solutions.

Furthermore, El-Sisi affirmed Egypt's ongoing commitment to assist its regional partners in resolving violence and alleviating the humanitarian, economic, and social repercussions stemming from conflict. He reiterated that collaborative efforts are essential for restoring stability and fostering development.

WUF12 attracted numerous high-profile attendees, including heads of state and key international figures. Notable participants included UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Jan van Zanen, Mayor of The Hague, and Anacláudia Rossbach, the Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN-Habitat. Their presence underscored the forum's importance as a platform for addressing urbanization challenges on a global scale.
