The US Justice Department has finalized a $100 million settlement with the Singaporean owner and operator of a cargo ship responsible for the destruction of a Baltimore bridge. This settlement arises from the tragic incident involving the 1,000-foot M/V Dali, which collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the early hours of March 26, resulting in the deaths of six road workers and blocking a vital shipping channel.

The owners, Grace Ocean Private Ltd and Synergy Marine Private Ltd, have agreed to pay a total of $101.1 million to settle a civil lawsuit aimed at recovering costs associated with the disaster response and the subsequent removal of bridge debris from the Fort McHenry Channel, a crucial route for maritime traffic leading to the port of Baltimore. Benjamin Mizer, a senior official at the Justice Department, emphasized the significance of this settlement, describing it as an important milestone nearly seven months after one of the most devastating transportation disasters in recent history.
“This resolution ensures that the costs of the federal government’s cleanup efforts in the Fort McHenry Channel are borne by Grace Ocean and Synergy and not the American taxpayer,” Mizer stated. However, the settlement does not cover any damages related to the eventual rebuilding of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which is the subject of a separate claim being pursued by the state of Maryland.
In addition to the federal settlement, the families of the six road workers who lost their lives in the accident are also seeking legal recourse. The incident not only claimed lives but also caused significant disruption to commercial navigation. The Fort McHenry Channel, a key hub for the auto industry, was reopened for commercial traffic on June 10, following extensive cleanup efforts.
As the legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on addressing the aftermath of this tragic event and ensuring that those responsible for the disaster are held accountable for the damages and losses incurred.
