In his speech, Sheikh Dr. Sultan underscored the role of language as a cornerstone of national pride, essential for safeguarding knowledge, history, and culture. He expressed gratitude for the dedicated efforts of all individuals involved in the project, acknowledging their commitment over the seven-year journey that culminated in the completion of 127 volumes. His Highness personally signed the final volume, which covers the Arabic letters "Waw" and "Ya."
In addition to celebrating the dictionary's completion, His Highness announced the launch of the Comprehensive Arabic Encyclopaedia project. This ambitious initiative aims to create a series of extensive volumes encompassing all Arabic terminology across various fields of knowledge. The encyclopaedia will serve as an accessible and comprehensive resource for Arabic language enthusiasts.
His Highness congratulated the Arab world for this remarkable achievement, stating, “Supporting Arabic is a duty for everyone in this nation.” He reaffirmed that the efforts to promote the Arabic language would continue, highlighting the dictionary's focus on its roots to realize its full potential. “The Arabic language encompasses all sciences and knowledge, and this historic dictionary acts as a vessel that holds it; we are proud of it,” he added.
The Ruler of Sharjah announced that all volumes of the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language would be available at the upcoming Sharjah International Book Fair, with plans to make the dictionary accessible online. This initiative aims to ensure the resource benefits researchers, students, and educators alike, moving beyond traditional library shelves to reach a broader audience.
Sheikh Dr. Sultan outlined that the work on the Comprehensive Arabic Encyclopaedia would commence immediately, promising to cover all Arabic terms in diverse fields such as sciences, literature, arts, and notable figures while maintaining the language's integrity. He stressed that foreign terms would not be included to preserve the purity of the Arabic language.
He explained that the encyclopaedia would follow a similar methodology to that of the Historical Dictionary, involving language scholars and experts from various countries who would employ both digital and traditional methods. This collaborative effort would ensure the highest production standards, focusing on user-friendliness and meticulous attention to detail.
During his address, His Highness conveyed optimism about the project, stating, “With the blessings of God, we shall begin the first step towards the comprehensive Arabic encyclopaedia.” He assured that the encyclopaedia would be completed even if it required up to 500 volumes, reiterating its availability online for everyone.
Emphasizing a commitment to the Arabic language's future, Sheikh Dr. Sultan discussed the establishment of cultural centres in Europe and Africa to support the learning and teaching of Arabic. He expressed his dedication to ensuring that all materials presented in public spaces reflect accurate and distortion-free knowledge.
Wrapping up his speech, His Highness recognized the collective efforts that contributed to the successful completion of the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language. He acknowledged the diverse individuals involved in the project, expressing appreciation for their dedication and hard work. “We hope that those who joined us in this endeavour will stay and carry on. Our journey is delightful, devoid of hazards, and abundant in affection—initially, affection for God, followed by this faith and this language,” he remarked.
The event concluded with a presentation that illustrated the stages of the Historical Dictionary's development, from inception to the final volumes. His Highness also toured Al Qasimi Publications, where he viewed documentary exhibitions featuring original handwritten manuscripts of his works, including the 1990 book “The Omani-French Relations.”
Attendees included Mohammed Obaid Al Zaabi, Head of the Protocol and Hospitality Department; Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, Director General of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority; Dr. Mohamed Safi Al Mosteghanemi, Secretary General of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah; Muhannad Bou Saida, Director of Al Qasimi Publications; and numerous staff members from both the Publications and the Academy.
