His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, opened the 19th edition of the Sharjah Nabati Poetry Festival on Monday evening. The festival, which is organised by the Department of Culture, will run from February 3 to February 10. It features 60 poets from different Arab countries and is being held at the Cultural Palace in Sharjah.
At the opening ceremony, a presentation was shown to highlight the achievements of the poets being honoured this year: Zaal bin Obaid bin Sarhan Al Gafli and Awad bin Rashid Al Kutbi. During the festival’s opening, poet Bati Al Madloom, the Director of the Al Hira Literary Council, recited a poem titled "Sharjah Sultan" in honour of the Ruler of Sharjah’s efforts to promote culture and poetry.
On the first night of the festival, poet Sultan bin Khaleef Al Tuneji recited a poem called "Al Wana," highlighting the importance of traditional poetry in the UAE’s culture and how it reflects the poet’s emotions, such as sadness and inner struggles.
Saudi poet Abdulaziz bin Sudhan also performed a poem called "Sharjah," which described the city’s impact on Arab culture and praised the Ruler’s support for poetry in the Arab world.
The Ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi, honoured the two poets, Zaal bin Obaid bin Sarhan Al Gafli and Awad bin Rashid Al Kutbi, for their lifelong contributions to Nabati poetry in the UAE.
The festival will continue for nine more evenings, including a special session for female poets from the Arab world.
