At various high-level events, Sheikha Shamma addressed critical themes central to this year’s discussions, including the transformative power of AI, the need for increased international climate finance, and the significance of partnerships for building resilience against climate change. Her engagements were designed to expand UICCA’s international partnerships while offering valuable insights and regional perspectives on global climate issues.
One of the highlights of her week was her involvement in the event titled "Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development," organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the UAE. During this special session, Sheikha Shamma elaborated on how AI can analyze vast datasets, improve climate modeling, and develop language models to share knowledge in Arabic. She underscored the necessity of equipping affected communities with accurate information and involving them in decision-making processes.
In another session, titled "Supercharging the Climate Transition," part of the ALTÉRRA high-level roundtable, Sheikha Shamma discussed blended finance's potential to close the climate finance gap and accelerate global climate goals. She referenced a recent UICCA report, co-produced with HSBC and Convergence Blended Finance, which identified the fragmented nature of international financial systems as a significant barrier to aligning available capital with impactful projects, especially in developing economies.
On September 24, 2024, during the Concordia Annual Summit, Sheikha Shamma participated in a panel discussing "Digital-Financial Literacy as a Vehicle for Economic Inclusion." In her remarks, she emphasized that financial inclusivity is essential for fostering a green economy, as it ensures equitable access to resources and promotes long-term economic growth. She highlighted the need for businesses and policymakers to collaborate actively in facilitating equitable resource distribution.
Beyond her speaking engagements, Sheikha Shamma held discussions with key leaders and stakeholders to strengthen UICCA’s global partnerships and cross-sector collaboration. Her meetings included conversations with notable figures such as His Excellency Dr. Abdallah Dardari, UN Assistant Secretary-General; Ambassador Melanne Verveer, Executive Director of the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security; and several leaders from various sectors, including AI, climate finance, and gender equality.
These meetings underscored UICCA's commitment to driving impactful climate action through international collaboration. By leveraging its role as a facilitator among the private, public, and third sectors, UICCA aims to support the UAE’s transition to a sustainable, green economy through research, policy advocacy, capacity building, and climate tech innovation. Sheikha Shamma’s efforts at the UNGA and Climate Week NYC are a testament to her dedication to fostering dialogue and collaboration in the global fight against climate change.
