Following the recent altercation involving Kangana Ranaut at Chandigarh airport, veteran actor Shabana Azmi has stepped into the fray, offering her perspective on the incident. While expressing her disapproval of the incident, Azmi emphasized the importance of security personnel adhering to proper protocols and refraining from taking the law into their own hands.
The episode unfolded as Ranaut, a newly elected Member of Parliament from Himachal Pradesh, was preparing to board a flight to Delhi. It was during this pre-flight process that an altercation occurred, resulting in Ranaut allegedly being slapped by a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable.
While mobile footage of the incident quickly circulated online, capturing moments leading up to the altercation, the precise moment of the alleged slap was not caught on camera. However, the video did capture a verbal exchange between Ranaut and security personnel.
In response to the incident, Ranaut later issued a video statement, expressing her concern over rising terrorism in Punjab and recounting the events from her perspective. She claimed that the constable had verbally abused her and slapped her, allegedly citing support for farmers as her reason for the action.
The constable, identified as Kulwinder Kaur, defended her actions, stating that she slapped Ranaut in response to the actor's remarks disrespecting farmers. This incident follows Ranaut's controversial comments in the past regarding the farmer protests, which had drawn significant backlash and demands for apology.
In December 2020, Ranaut had made remarks on social media about protesters being available for hire for Rs 100. Subsequently, in February 2021, she labeled protesters as "terrorists" in response to international support for the farmer protests, further escalating tensions surrounding the issue.
Despite the repeal of the contentious farm laws in December 2021, the aftermath of the protests continues to linger, with Ranaut's past statements contributing to ongoing discord. This incident at Chandigarh airport serves as a stark reminder of the deep-seated tensions surrounding the farmer protests and the broader issues of free speech and dissent in India.
