ROME — On Thursday, a powerful wave of rainstorms unleashed havoc across northern Italy, severely impacting the financial center of Milan and sparking urgent concerns for a man missing in the Piedmont region. The storms caused extensive flooding, with dramatic images showing the wheel of a tractor partially submerged in the Orco Creek near Turin. The vehicle had overturned in the treacherous, muddy waters, and local authorities have been tirelessly searching for the 58-year-old man who was on board.

In the Val di Susa area of Piedmont, the overflowing river led to the collapse of two bridges, obstructing a provincial road and leaving approximately 50 residents stranded in two isolated villages. The destructive impact of the storm extended to Lombardy and Veneto, where the flooding disrupted daily life and caused significant damage. In Milan, the Seveso and Lambro rivers breached their banks, leading to widespread inundation.
Firefighters in Milan reported a surge in emergency calls as they worked to rescue individuals trapped in their vehicles within flooded underpasses and to pump out water from inundated basements. The city’s subway system faced service interruptions due to the rising water levels. Notably, for the first time since its establishment in 1976, Milan’s Radio Popolare station had to suspend broadcasting as its studios were overwhelmed by water.
The storms have underscored a broader concern among scientists who warn that the climate crisis is exacerbating the frequency and severity of extreme weather events. These events, including intense heatwaves, droughts, and heavy rainfall, are becoming more common as warmer air can retain more moisture, leading to more intense storms.
While northern Italy grapples with these severe weather conditions, southern regions, particularly Sicily and Sardinia, have been struggling with severe droughts. This prolonged dry spell has led to significant challenges for local agriculture and tourism, highlighting the stark contrasts in weather impacts across the country.
