COVID-19 cases are on the rise again in seven states across the US, marking the first increase since December last year. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), California, Arkansas, Florida, Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, and Texas are experiencing a notable uptick in cases. Public health officials have raised concerns as wastewater surveillance indicates "very high" levels of the virus in these states.
Los Angeles, one of the hardest-hit areas, has reported a surge in cases, including among notable figures like Mayor Karen Bass, who recently tested positive for COVID-19, as reported by MSN. The recent spike represents a 17% increase in cases compared to late June, with daily averages rising from 215 to 307 cases by early July.

The rise has been attributed to the emergence of two new variants, including FLiRT, known for its high transmissibility though not causing severe illness. As of April 13, 2024, California has reported over 111 million cases, Texas over 9 million, and Florida over 8 million cases, underscoring the scale of the ongoing challenge.
Symptoms associated with these new variants include fever, cough, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, muscle aches, shortness of breath, headache, and runny nose. Serious symptoms like chest pain and difficulty breathing have also been reported.
In response to the increase, health authorities urge continued adherence to safety measures such as mask-wearing and social distancing, especially in affected states. Vaccination remains crucial, particularly for high-risk groups, despite reports that 36% of those aged 65 and above have yet to receive updated vaccines available since September.
Health experts recommend frequent testing, especially for symptomatic individuals using rapid tests over several days to detect FLiRT strains early. Updated guidelines allow asymptomatic individuals with mild symptoms to return to normal activities after a single day of isolation, provided they remain fever-free.
The situation continues to evolve, with ongoing efforts to mitigate transmission and monitor the impact of these new variants on public health.
