Jerusalem: Israel's military announced on Sunday that a high-ranking commander had tendered his resignation due to what he termed as his failure to prevent the October 7 assault by Palestinian militants.

Brigadier General Avi Rosenfeld, the commander of the 143rd Division, conveyed his decision to step down to his superiors, as stated in a military statement.

Rosenfeld expressed his accountability in a resignation letter disclosed by the army, stating, "Each individual must bear responsibility for their actions, and I acknowledge mine within Division 143."

He further admitted, "On October 7, I failed in my fundamental mission: to safeguard the perimeter," alluding to the Israeli communities situated along the Gaza border.

Earlier in April, Major General Aharon Haliva, Israel's military intelligence chief, had become the first top official to resign following the failure to thwart the attack that rattled both Israel and the global community.

Haliva, with 38 years of service, shouldered the responsibility for the lapse in preventing the assault in his resignation letter.

"The intelligence division under my supervision fell short of fulfilling our entrusted duty," Haliva stated.

The October 7 attack marked the commencement of the deadliest conflict in Gaza's history, resulting in the loss of 1,194 lives, predominantly civilians, according to an AFP count based on Israeli official data.

In response, Israel initiated a retaliatory military campaign that claimed the lives of at least 37,084 individuals in Gaza, a vast majority being civilians, as reported by the territory's health ministry.
